Martin Luther King Jr. Hwy (MD 704) Streetscape Improvement
On November 27, 2018 consultants facilitated a stakeholders’ (SHA, municipal staff, M-NCPPC) meeting to present and discuss options. Project staff briefed the City Council on January 7, 2019. The next milestone is to hold a community meeting to obtain citizen input on the various streetscape design options. This meeting has been scheduled for March 28, 2019, 6:00 pm at the Seat Pleasant Community Center, located at 5720 Addison Road, Seat Pleasant, Maryland. See Flyer.
To advance the economic development and healthy living goals of the city the objective of this project is to obtain 30% engineering design plans for MD 704 improvements that accommodate pedestrians, bicyclists, and cars. Within the existing State right-of-way there is excess land from ‘Road Diet’ lane reductions. This allows for the redesign of the roadway to encourage safe, non-vehicular uses of Martin Luther King Jr. Highway. Implementation will create a more user-friendly streetscape; a neighborhood street where people will want to stop to shop, eat, and exercise (walk or bike). This design plan can be used to request funding to construct the recommended improvements.
