Are you an artist or musician who'd like to receive notices about exhibitions or competitions? Sign up for our mailing list at montpelier.arts@pgparks.com.

Please include “Artist” or “Musician” in the subject line along with your name, address, and email in the body of the email.

As they become available, applications are available online at montpelierartscenter.submittable.com. The Arts and Cultural Heritage Division also sends monthly Arts Opportunities via email.

The Main Gallery

Artists interested in exhibiting in the Main Gallery or curators who want to propose an exhibition should email montpelier.arts@pgparks.com with a one-page proposal, résumé(s), and no fewer than 20 images. Or these items can be mailed to:

Jurying for Studio Space at Montpelier Arts Center

Join a thriving community of professional artists in the Montpelier Resident Artist Program! These artists work in a diverse variety of media and styles, maintain studio hours for the public to visit, and participate in community events.

Artists are selected by a jury panel and exhibit their work in the Montpelier Arts Center’s Resident Artist Gallery on a rotating basis.  

To be eligible, artists must be at least 18 years old and reside in Maryland. Residents of Prince George’s and Montgomery Counties will take precedence over those residing in other jurisdictions. 

Application Requirements:
  • All entries must be submitted online at montpelierartscenter.submittable.com
  • Current resume, artist statement, and biography for each artist who applies
  • Letter of intent stating reasons for applying, what you hope to accomplish through/during your residency, how studio space will be used, and any special projects you propose with Montpelier Arts Center
  • A minimum of 10 and a maximum of 15 digital images that best exemplify your portfolio/proposal, with the title, dates, and dimensions of each work. Images must be a minimum of 300 dpi.
  • Three professional references (include their relation to you and appropriate contact information).

Each selected artist will be granted a one-year lease for rental space at Montpelier Arts Center, renewable two times for a potential total of three years in residency. Montpelier resident artists may hold solo exhibitions in the Resident Artist Gallery on a rotating basis.

Classical Recital Competition for 2016-2017

Deadline: Entries will be due Spring 2016. Please check back for details.

Classical musicians are being sought for the 2016-2017 Montpelier Arts Center Recital Competition! Winners will be featured in a recital for the 2016-2017 season.
Application Requirements:
  • Ten-minute CD featuring material, which best identifies your repertoire and technique 
  • Artist biography 
  • Headshot (at least 8”x10” and 300 dpi); must be appropriate for print 
  • Current one-page resume with contact information for each participating musician

Once recordings are submitted, they will become the property of the Arts and Cultural Heritage Division of The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission. If you would prefer to have your recording returned after the judging, please provide a self-addressed stamped envelope with your application.

Musicians must be 18 & older to be considered. There are no geographical restrictions, but winners are responsible for their own transportation.

Each artist/group will receive a $400 honorarium. Accompanists will receive a $200 honorarium.

Library Gallery Exhibition Competition for September 2016-August 2017

Deadline: Monday, April 4, 2016 at 11:59 pm 

Montpelier Arts Center is holding a competition for exhibitions that will be held in the Library Gallery September 2016-August 2017. To be eligible, artists must be 18 years & older and reside in Maryland. Previous winners from 2011 to the present are ineligible. The juror may elect to exhibit artists who apply for solo shows or artists who apply as groups.

An honorarium of $300 will be presented for each exhibition to the artist(s) exhibiting (i.e. groups would share the $300 honorarium.) The Montpelier Arts Center staff will handle all promotion and installation, as well as the reception. Please note, the Arts Center retains a 25% commission on sales of works sold during the exhibition. 

Application Requirements:
  • All entries must be submitted online at montpelierartscenter.submittable.com.
  • Artist/Artist Group statement
  • Current résumé of all artists to exhibit
  • A proposal of no more than 500 words
  • Preferred month for your show, and include second and third choices
  • A minimum of ten (10) and a maximum of fifteen (15) digital images that best exemplify your portfolio/proposal. Images must be in JPEG format at a minimum 300 dpi.
