Classes, Camps, & Workshops

The Publick Playhouse offers a variety of opportunities for residents to participate in the arts through various workshops and camps. Below are the workshops and master classes offered throughout the year.

Thursday,  November 19, 2015, 6:30-8 pm
Master Class by Lula Washington Dance Theatre: Fusion
This is an open level class for students of all ages and skill levels. This fun, fast-moving class focuses on a fusion of dance styles including ballet, modern, jazz, contemporary, and African Dance. Strengthening, stretching, and stamina building will be emphasized 
Fees: $20/person; $15 if purchased with a ticket to a Nov. 21 performance; $10/observer

Thursday, November 19, 2015, 8-9:30 pm
Repertory Workshop with Lula Washington Dance Theatre
This is for intermediate and advanced modern dance lovers. This workshop focuses on teaching actual movements from the dance company’s range of dance pieces by choreographers as diverse as Donald McKayle, Christopher Huggins, Lula Washington, Tamica Washington-Miller, and Rennie Harris. Dancers will learn to interpret the movement, and to execute phrases and varying dance styles with the proper approaches.
Fees: $20/person; $15/person if purchased with a ticket to a Nov. 21 performance; $10/observer

Master Class by Lula Washington Dance Theatre: Dunham/Afro-Haitian/African
This workshop focuses on the Katherine Dunham style of dance. It blends African, Afro-Haitian, modern, and ballet to create a distinct Dunham dance approach. Taught by Lula Washington, students will learn actual choreography created by Katherine Dunham, a pioneer African-American dance artist.
Fee: $20/person; $15/person if purchased with a ticket to a Nov. 21 performance; $10/observer

Wednesday, April 26, 2016, 7-9 pm
Master Class with Dallas Black Dance Theatre: African Dance 
Experience African dance and drumming in an open master class of West African movement. Join the twelve dancers from Dallas Black Dance Theatre in this great adventure. For ages 15 and up.
Fee: $20/person; $15/person if purchased with a ticket to an April 30 or May 1, 2016 performance; $10/observer

Thursday, April 27, 2016, 6-7:30 pm
Master Class with Dallas Black Dance Theatre: Liturgical Dance for Youth 
Young dancers won’t want to miss this 90-minute class specially designed for youth. DBDT dancers teach praise dance movements that can be used in worship services or special events. Students will also learn a spiritual ballet. For ages 8-14.
Fee: $20/person; $15/person if purchased with a ticket to an April 30 or May 1, 2016 performance; $10/observer

Thursday, April 28, 2016, 7:45-9:15 pm
Master Class with Dallas Black Dance Theatre: Liturgical Dance for Teens and Adults 
This class is designed for teen and adult dancers will expand students’ knowledge of praise dance movement and choreography that can be used in worship services or special events. Students will also learn a spiritual ballet.
Fee: $20/person; $15/person if purchased with a ticket to an April 30 or May 1, 2016 performance; $10/observer

Thursday, April 27, 2016, 7-9 pm
Master Class with Dallas Black Dance Theatre: Open Master Class: Scholarship Audition
Advanced dance students who would like to attend the DBDT Summer Intensive Professional Workshop can attend this open master class to be considered for a scholarship. Call the box office at 301-277-1710 for more information.
