Celebrate Africa!

Celebrate Africa Festival 2022

Celebrate Africa returns this September to Bladensburg Waterfront Park!

Scheduled for September 25th, 2022 from 12 - 6 pm, this year marks the fifth anniversary of this award-winning festival. As in the past, the festival will continue to honor the artistic and cultural contributions of the African immigrant community to Prince George’s County and beyond.

Please note that our Celebrate Africa festival is happening rain or shine! We always hope for (sun)shine but just in case, be sure to pack and umbrella or two!

Performers & Events

We’re excited to share our listing of this year’s performers and events:

  • Comedienne, actor, storyteller, and vocalist Anna Mwhalago will leave you in stitches and in tears as she performs excerpts from several of her most recent shows. This native Kenyan draws upon her experience as an African immigrant to the United States, and shares her journey of coming to terms with her colonial, African, and immigrant identities, and finding peace and wholeness along the way.
  • Nigerian-Canadian Singer/Songwriter TolumiDE (pronounced toe-lu-mee-day), will charm and delight audiences with her unique fusion of contemporary R&B with African pop, the result being a sound called “Suya Soul.”
  • Inspired by the bold and infectious afrobeat sound of Nigeria’s Fela Kuti, Chopteeth's sounds will connect the common groove between the funkiest, most hip-shakin’ West African and American popular music on the planet.
  • Red Carpet Africa - the title and theme of this year’s fashion show - will feature designs from award-winning Ghanian-born designer Afua Sam and will showcase the clothing trends, tastes, and styles of African film stars from Nigeria, Ghana, Botswana, and other African film industry hubs.

Other festival highlights include Storytelling on the River, drumming and dancing with the Performing Arts Center for African Cultures, a dance fitness event with instructors teaching the latest video dance moves from across the continent, meditation to the sounds of the Kora with master musician and jeli/griot Amadou Kouyate, music of the royal courts of 13th century Manding West Africa with The Uasuf Gueye Trio and a crafting demo and instruction.

There will also be food vendors on site; stay tuned for more information!

Celebrate Africa is FREE and open to the public.
