Functional Master Plan For Parks, Recreation & Open Space 2040
Project description:Â Â
The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission, Department of Parks and Recreation (the Department) in Prince George’s County is updating the Formula 2040: Functional Master Plan for Parks, Recreation, and Open Space. This document proactively plans for Prince George’s County’s recreation programs, trails, and open space needs- now and in the future. The first version of the Formula 2040 Master Plan was published in 2013. In accordance with the reaccreditation requirements of the Commission for Accreditation of Park and Recreation Agencies (CAPRA), the Formula 2040 Progress Report is updated every five years. The first Progress Report was updated in 2019, and the second Progress Report was presented to the Planning Board in December 2024. The second Progress Report (also known as the Assessment Report) is the catalyst for initiating Master Plan update. Upon adoption by the Prince George’s County Council (District Council), the updated Master Plan will become part of the County’s General Plan. Â
Status/Project timeline: Â
The updated Formula 2040 Master Plan is expected to be published in Fall, 2027. Â
The Department started working with a consultant team to complete this project in October 2024. In a period of roughly four-months, the second Progress Report was completed and presented to the Planning Board (link) in January, 2025. Â
This project consists of two phases. Phase I involves internal coordination with the Department staff, evaluating existing conditions and trends, and writing the Progress Report (link). Phase II includes continued engagement with the Department staff, followed by public outreach and engagement with the community at large. Â
If you need more information on how to participate and connect to the coordinating team, please reach out to the co-leads Molline Jackson (molline.jackson@pgparks.com) and Don Herring (don.herring@pgparks,com) for specific details leading up to the Master Plan update and final approvals. Â
