  • Department of Parks and Recreation in Prince George’s County announces official programming for Hispanic Heritage Month 2024

    RIVERDALE, Md. – M-NCPPC, Department of Parks and Recreation, Prince George’s County is pleased to announce an exciting series of events celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month 2024. Starting September 14 through October 15, we invite the community and the media to honor and embrace the rich cultural contributions of Hispanic and Latino Americans through interactive activities, live music, traditional dance performances, art exhibitions, and family-friendly festivals.

    “We are thrilled to host these events during Hispanic Heritage Month, offering our community a chance to learn, celebrate, and honor the rich contributions of Hispanics and Latino Americans,” said Bill Tyler, Director of M-NCPPC, Department of Parks and Recreation, Prince George’s County. “Prince George’s County is home to a thriving Latino population, and this year’s celebrations reflect the Department’s commitment to inclusivity, diversity, and cultural appreciation.”

    Latinas in Aviation Global Festival

    In celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month M-NCPPC, Department of Parks and Recreation’s College Park Aviation Museum and Airport is honoring Latina pioneers in aviation and celebrating Hispanic culture. This one-of-a-kind festival allows you to meet and hear from inspiring Latinas and learn about the magic of aviation. Enjoy demos & children’s activities, food, community art, bilingual story time, author meet and greets, and giveaways. Cap off the afternoon with a 3 pm concert performance.

    Hispanic Festival

    The Hispanic Festival is celebrating its 40th anniversary. Kickoff Hispanic Heritage Month with a vibrant celebration. This FREE festival draws over 10,000 people to Lane Manor Park in Adelphi, bringing the community together for an unforgettable day. Enjoy live entertainment, delicious ethnic food, craft vendors, carnival games, exhibitors, and more.

    Festival Del Rio

    Celebrate the outdoors and the Anacostia River at the 9th annual Festival del Rio Anacostia. This bilingual environmental festival teaches the community about the river and how to become better stewards of the Anacostia and its watersheds. Enjoy hands-on activities, crafts, entertainment, delicious food, fishing demos, live animals, and free boat rides and giveaways.

    Hispanic Heritage Month Celebración

    Join us for a FREE, family-friendly event celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month! The celebración will include an art exhibit of artists Silvia Martinez (Puerto Rico) and Pepe Piedra (Peru) exhibit: “Icons, Idioms and Myth,” live music, dancing, arts & crafts activities for children, and light refreshments.

    M-NCPPC, Department of Parks and Recreation, Prince George’s County Cancels Outdoor Programs for August 9 Due to Hazardous Weather Conditions

    RIVERDALE, Md. – M-NCPPC, Department of Parks and Recreation in Prince George’s County, announces the cancellation of all outdoor programming for August 9 due to hazardous weather conditions in the Washington Metropolitan area. Patrons are encouraged to seek shelter and avoid driving through flooded roads. The following outdoor facilities will be closed out of an abundance of caution.

    • Outdoor Aquatic Facilities
    • Golf Courses
    • The Wonderful World of Watkins at Watkins Regional Park (301 Watkins Park Drive, Upper Marlboro, MD 20774)
    • Prince George’s County Trap and Skeet Center (10400 Good Luck Road, Glenn Dale, MD 20769)

    All indoor facilities will remain open, and indoor programs will continue as planned.

    Here are some tips for staying safe during thunderstorms and heavy winds:

    • Prepare an Emergency Kit: Include essential items such as water, non-perishable food, a flashlight, batteries, a first aid kit, and necessary medications.
    • Secure Outdoor Items: Bring in or secure loose objects such as patio furniture, garbage cans, and decorations to prevent them from causing damage during the high winds.
    • Listen for Updates: Stay informed about weather reports and alerts through a reliable weather source.
    • Seek Shelter Indoors: Stay inside a sturdy building. Avoid open fields, hilltops, and isolated trees.
    • Help Neighbors: Check on elderly or vulnerable neighbors to ensure they are safe and have not been affected by the storm.

  • Extreme Heat Alters M-NCPPC, Department of Parks and Recreation, Prince George’s County Outdoor Programs for August 2 Due to Extreme Heat; Cooling Centers and Pools Remain Open

    Riverdale, MD – The Maryland National Capital Park and Planning Commission (M-NCPPC), Department of Parks and Recreation in Prince George’s County, announces the cancellation of all outdoor programming from noon to 8:00 pm on August 2, except for a few listed below, due to the heat advisory issued by the National Weather Service. The safety of our patrons and staff is our top priority, and we encourage everyone to stay cool and hydrated.

    While most outdoor programs are canceled, some events will continue with additional safety protocols in place:

    • The Boat Ride scheduled for noon at Bladensburg Waterfront Park (4601 Annapolis Road, Bladensburg, MD 20710) will proceed as planned.
    • The Wonderful World of Watkins at Watkins Regional Park (301 Watkins Park Drive, Upper Marlboro, MD 20774) will close at 1 pm.
    • Movies in the Parks at Watkins Regional Park will start at 8 pm.

    All indoor and outdoor pools and cooling centers will remain open and operate under regular scheduled hours. Advanced reservations are encouraged to ensure patrons can access the pools.
