  • M-NCPPC, Department of Parks and Recreation, Prince George’s County Celebrates Women’s History Month

    Riverdale, MD – The Department of Parks and Recreation in Prince George’s County, part of the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission, is celebrating Women’s History Month with female-featured concerts, poetry readings, theatre and dance performances, and more. A few programs scheduled throughout the month include:

    Brandee Younger

    March 2, Publick Playhouse
    A leading voice of the harp, Brandee Younger recently made history at the 2022 Grammy Awards as the first Black female solo artist nominated in the Best Instrumental Composition category for her song “Beautiful Is Black” that also received a 2022 NAACP Image Award nomination for Outstanding Jazz Album: Instrumental. Her most recent album honors trailblazer Dorothy Ashby. Over her career, Younger has performed and recorded across countless genres with artists including John Legend, The Roots, Lauryn Hill, Common, Pharoah Sanders, Ravi Coltrane, Ron Carter, and Charlie Haden.

    Education on Stage: Harriet Tubman & the Underground Railroad

    March 12, Publick Playhouse
    This stirring drama with music is a classic tribute to the great American who freed herself and hundreds of others from the bonds of slavery. Share her adventurous life with your students in this accurate and deeply moving musical history lesson.

    Best for Ages 8-13. Tickets: $6/person.

    Carmen Craven: A Tribute to Stephanie Mills

    March 16, Harmony Hall Arts Center
    This performance will showcase the talents of Carmen Craven, an accomplished vocalist who has been singing, dancing, and acting since the tender age of two. Carmen’s musical homage to the incomparable Ms. Stephanie Mills is by far the fan’s favorite and she’s been affectionately called the DMV’s Lil’ Stephanie Mills! Carmen has drawn local and national attention for her Tribute to The Music of Mills. Her rendition of ‘Home’ has drawn rave reviews from audiences both locally and nationally.

    Syncopated Ladies

    March 23-24, Publick Playhouse
    Syncopated Ladies: Live is a ground-breaking all-female tap production that propels beautiful, classy, and diverse women onto a re-invigorated stage, weaving their inspiring stories with intricate footwork, feminine prowess, and life-renewing energy. It is a celebration of sisterhood, empowerment, and Black girl magic wrapped up in the package of a music video. Dancing to today’s cutting-edge music, from pop to hip-hop to salsa, and even a couple tear-jerking ballads, this show is electrifying, stirring, and energizing!

    For All Ages. Tickets: $45/person, $40/person for seniors, students, and groups of 20 or more.

  • M-NCPPC, Department of Parks and Recreation in Prince George’s County Announces Opening of New Indoor Track at Prince George’s Sports & Learning Complex

    Riverdale, Md. – The Department of Parks and Recreation in Prince George’s County, part of the M-NCPPC, announces the completion of the indoor track installation at Prince George’s Sports & Learning Complex. The Department remains committed to providing an ultramodern track amenity that will enhance the community’s athletic experiences.

    The indoor track underwent scheduled replacement of flooring due to the end-of-life time limit. Other improvements include:

    • Complete replacement of two layers of track surfacing
    • Installation of two new pole vault plant boxes
    • Installation of eight new long jump boards
    • Wiring and audio/visual upgrades
    • Flooring installation under the stands (to be completed after track season)

    Managed by the Department’s Capital Planning and Development Division, the project was carried out by Barco Enterprises Inc. and Miller Sports Construction. Renovations were completed from August 2023 to January 2024. The Complex continued to offer a variety of programs while renovations were made. Now well underway, the 2023-2024 indoor track season was only minimally affected by the closure.

    “The Department of Parks and Recreation has invested heavily to provide the highest quality indoor track and field experience for our residents and rental clients. The recent track renovations and upgrades have been well-received by our patrons, athletes, and rental clients,” according to Tara Stewart, Division Chief, Aquatics and Athletic Facilities. “The Prince George’s Sports and Learning Complex’s management team and the Department’s Capital Planning & Development Division were very purposeful in selecting design elements and upgrades to enhance the experience for everyday users, avid fitness participants, and competitive athletes within Prince George’s County and the Region.”

    The Department appreciates patrons’ patience and understanding while these necessary upgrades were made. Some final additional improvements to the facility surfacing, specifically under the bleachers, will be completed once the track season has concluded.   • M-NCPPC, Department of Parks and Recreation, Prince George’s County Reopens Prince George’s Sports and Learning Competition Pool

    The Competition Pool at Prince George’s Sports & Learning Complex will reopen on Wednesday, February 14, at 6 am. M-NCPPC, Department of Parks and Recreation, Prince George’s County completed an assessment and necessary repairs to the pool’s heating system which impacted our ability to maintain the pool’s temperature above 70 degrees. Please note that during this time, the pool will operate under Winter hours found below:

    Winter Operating Schedule through May, 2024 

    Monday: 6 am – 8 pm
    Tuesday: 6 am – 12 pm, 4 pm – 8 pm
    Wednesday: 6 am – 8 pm
    Thursday: 6 am – 12 pm, 4 pm – 8 pm
    Friday: 6 am – 8 pm
    Saturday: 9 am – 5 pm
    Sunday: 12 pm – 5 pm

    We want to remind our valued patrons that planning is underway to implement a long-term major capital improvement project for the competition pool at the Prince George’s Sports and Learning Complex. As we move forward with the next stages of planning for this major project, the pool may be closed intermittently to address operational issues as they arise.
